Projects ASADA Malinches de Pinilla: Quality water for a Sustainable Community

The ASADA Malinches de Pinilla is an association that is dedicated to managing and operating the drinking water service at Pinilla Hacienda, a tourist and residential area located in the county of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The ASADA Malinches de Pinilla has a network of wells that extract water from the aquifer mantles. The water from the wells is subjected to a rigorous process of treatment and quality control, to ensure that it meets sanitary and environmental standards. The mission of the ASADA Malinches de Pinilla is to provide an efficient, safe, and accessible drinking water service to its associates and users, as well as to contribute to the sustainable development of the community and the environment. To do this, the ASADA Malinches de Pinilla carries out various projects, such as the expansion and improvement of the hydraulic infrastructure, the implementation of measurement and billing systems, the promotion of the rational and responsible use of water, the training and awareness of the collaborators and the population, and the active participation in the instances of management and governance of the water resource. The ASADA Malinches de Pinilla is an example of community organization that works for the well-being of its associates and the care of water, the essence of life.

NEW WELLS

New Well 3A: This new well has a flow rate of 2.86 L/s since October 2023.

The activities included the entire process from the application for concession, drilling, assembly, pumping test, quality tests, request for electrical service, construction of a booth, assembly of the pipe sleeve, installation of drive pipe, electromechanical assembly, and starting its operation.

Icacal Well Rehabilitation:

This existing well which was in disuse, currently provides a flow rate of 0.86 L/s since October 2023. The activities included cleaning, camera inspection, water quality tests, pumping and quality tests to determine its potential to be rehabilitated, and once this potential was demonstrated, installation of the drive pipe was done, request for electrical service, assembly of the pipe sleeve, electromechanical assembly and starting its operation.

Both wells come to reinforce the available flow in order to meet the demand for water during the dry season.

“Iron and Manganese Treatment and Removal Plant”

The treatment system allows reducing turbidity, organic matter, suspended solids, iron and manganese in the water, as well as strengthening the disinfection process prior to final distribution to users, with this, ASADA Malinches de Pinilla ensures a supply of quality water to users.

This system has a capacity of 10 liters per second.

This work is the first stage of the strategic plan to improve the quality of the water and its organoleptic properties. It will be accompanied by future projects related to increasing its installed capacity and cleaning and/or replacing pipes in the distribution network.

Rehabilitation of drinking water storage tank

Status: 100% finished

The storage tank allows us to have a volume of five hundred m3, intended to regulate the fluctuations of hourly consumption by our users, in addition to having a volume of water to cope with possible fires. It also unifies water chlorination and allows to improve the operation of the system with instant control of water consumption.

First well in Guanacaste that uses a Solar Energy System to operate

status: 100% finished

ASADA, through its Board of Directors and interdisciplinary team, has managed to efficiently develop an effective economic-financial, strategic and organizational plan for the fulfillment of its objectives, among which is investment in improvement projects, expansions and modernization with innovation and sustainable approach.

One of them included studies on different disused wells, within which there was a particular drilling that met the ideal conditions to be equipped and operated with clean energy, so the board of directors and management proceeded to market research and finally to approve such equipment.

This well has a depth of 36 meters, and its pumping equipment consists of a 5 horsepower motor and pump set of German technology, powered by 18 photovoltaic panels which will generate a maximum of 18 kW, for water production. of around 3.5 liters per second, for 12 hours a day. The investment in this project is around 11 million colones and includes well casing, interconnection to the main network of 100 meters in 2-inch pipe, backfilling of the site, perimeter closure and equipment. It is estimated that the investment is recovered in 8 years
Among the benefits obtained by putting this well into operation are:
1. Strengthening efforts in terms of environmental sustainability, adopting the use of clean energy.

2. Reduction of the water footprint of the system’s overall operation process.

3. Decrease in electrical infrastructure costs due to the interconnection of pumping equipment.

4. Reduction of operating costs related to energy consumption and general maintenance.

Construction of impulse line

(Storage wells-tank)

The construction of the impulse line will allow the direct relationship between the instantaneous consumption of the distribution network and the water supply from the sources (wells) to be separated, as well as direct the flow from the wells to the treatment system and storage tank.
This line has a length of 2,210 meters with diameters of 4, 6 and 8 inches, constructed of high-density polyethylene, under the construction method of directed horizontal drilling.

Status: 100% finished
